Financial Freedom shows when your investment portfolio is projected to become large enough to sustainably cover your COIL.
Accessing the calculator
If you are the workspace owner, open Lifestyle Calculator from the main sidebar, then select the Financial freedom tab.
Like the main lifestyle calculator, this tool is private to the workspace owner.
Before you start
Financial Freedom uses the COIL from the Lifestyle calculator tab. Add your monthly lifestyle categories there first.
Your yearly COIL is the sum of those monthly categories multiplied by 12. The separate savings target is not included in COIL.
Investment assumptions
The calculator saves three assumptions:
| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Current portfolio value | The current value of the investments you want to include |
| Expected annual return | The average yearly growth expected before withdrawals |
| Withdrawal rate | The percentage of the portfolio you plan to withdraw each year |
The fields are prefilled with an 8% expected annual return and a 4% withdrawal rate.
Changes save automatically. The results and chart update while you edit so you can compare different scenarios.
Your financial freedom target
The target answers: how large would the portfolio need to be for planned yearly withdrawals to equal yearly COIL?
The calculator uses:
Financial freedom portfolio = Yearly COIL / Withdrawal rate
For example, a yearly COIL of $120,000 and a 4% withdrawal rate produce a $3,000,000 portfolio target.
The result area also shows:
- How much of the target your current portfolio already funds
- The monthly amount your current portfolio can sustainably provide
- The estimated time to financial freedom
- The projected calendar month when the target is reached
If the current portfolio already meets the target, the calculator marks financial freedom as reached now.
Reading the chart
The chart uses the same visual style as LimitLytics dashboards:
- Projected portfolio shows the current portfolio compounding at the expected annual return
- Freedom target is the portfolio required to sustain yearly COIL
- Financial freedom is the vertical marker where the projection reaches the target
The chart shows at least 10 years and expands to include five years after the projected milestone, up to a 60-year planning window.
If the target is more than 60 years away, the estimated date still appears in the result cards, but the vertical marker falls outside the displayed chart.
What the projection includes
This first model compounds the portfolio already entered. It assumes:
- A consistent annual return
- A constant COIL in today's currency
- No additional investment contributions before financial freedom
- No investment fees, taxes, inflation, or market volatility
Note: Financial Freedom is a planning scenario, not financial advice or a prediction of future investment performance.
When no date is available
The calculator explains why a projection cannot currently reach the target:
- Add lifestyle costs if COIL is zero
- Enter a portfolio value above zero because this version does not model future contributions
- Use an expected return above 0% when the portfolio is below the target
- Enter a withdrawal rate above 0%
